Hello!!

I decide to teach Kid of Deaf Adult (KODA) surfing lessons because last year I taught some deaf children and adults. My new challenge would be to teach KODA because it's a bit different than deaf student; however they all know American Sign Language (ASL). It's perfect for me so I can communicate with anyone who knows ASL much easier. Teaching them in ASL really does inspire me. Here are some the photos that I taught 3 KODAS.

I did really had a great time teaching them. Seeing them smile influenced me to smile then I influenced them back too. It was really cool! Now you noticed the students wearing yellow shirts and I was wearing red shirt, there is a short story behind this. Remember I mentioned about last year that I was teaching deaf students as voluntary, I decided to go to Pacific Beach Surf Shop because I would to be more involved with teaching surf lessons. The owner of the shop named Randy knows me from surfing at my local spot and I asked him some questions about teaching skills and rules of teaching students.

After talking with him, he decided to ask me why not work for him. It was funny because I was asking him questions and I did not expect to work for him right away. He was asking me how long I have surfed and if I have alot of experiences with surfing. I told him yes, I have surfed for 14 years and the first time I ever surfed was about 20 years ago. Randy thought I'm qualified for the job and wondered if I could make some contacts in the deaf community. I told him yes then he said go ahead start making contacts with them. I'm shocked that I can go ahead and contact the deaf community.

Wait a minute, deaf community? How about ASL community? Yes, it's more like it. There are ASL students out there that they are taking ASL classes. Why not teach them how to surf and learn ASL at the same time?! It's win and win situation. SDDS: Bad and Good news

Bad News:
San Diego Deaf Surfriders (SDDS), Orange County Deaf Surfriders (OCDS), and USDSA-CA agreed to not meet at San Onofre, CA on March 16, 2008. Due weather and wave condition would not worth to surf.

Good News:
Come and join us for hang out at California Surf museum in Oceanside at 10AM! We are interested to learn about surf history through picture and some of vintage surfboards.

I would like to let you know that I’m apology for short notice with an announcement.

Hello,

It was awesome to do uploaded a video clip from pager (Treo 755p) to a vlog. This video clip was taken at Tourmaline surf park (San Diego,CA) today. It is a perfect day for kite-surfing and windsurfing because there are some strong winds in the early afternoon today.

San Diego Deaf Surfriders (SDDS), Orange County Deaf Surfriders (OCDS), and USDSA-CA agreed to meet at San Onofre, CA again on March 16, 2008. Come and join us for surfing or hang out at the beach! We probably will be doing the unofficial surfing contest that we could be prepare for the World Deaf Surfing Championship next year.

SDDS at San Onofre “SanO”

On 2/17/08, Deaf and ASL signer surfers met at San Onofre from Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego. I learned that people knew about coming to SanO by through the website: USDSA, CALDeaf, and SDDS without any emails involved! All of us were stoked by surfing all morning until we returned to the sand by noon-ish. We were inspired by sharing good surfing stories. Also, we were interested about USDSA that Marina shared the information with us.

John and I decided to go back to surf more and the waves were smaller than earlier. So, I brought something with me while surfing that I would like to share it to you on the vlog!

San Diego Deaf Surfriders and Orange County Deaf Surfriders met at San Onofre, CA on Dec. 29, 2007. We had a good time on a small day (surf) and the water was freezing cold (55 degree)! Then we hung out at the beach all morning. We shared our ideas for the year of 2008 through blogs and it's possibly for us to do the announcements of surf reports and events.

More friends arrived later in the morning.

Well, the waiting is over. Congratulations!! Your video, "Deaf Surf Lesson at La Jolla Shores" has received the Best of Class (Surfing Movies) Award.

You'll see the Festival Awards are currently posted on the blogsite (http://califcoastalviews.blogspot.com). The announcement will remain on the blogsite for the next year.

A Deaf Youth learn how to surf at Oceanside,CA

Hello..

I want to share with you about Terrie Berdy and her family who came down to Oceanside from Riverside for surf lessons. Terrie contacted me last 3 week after we met at KODAWest event in Huntington Beach that her kids (Sean and Tyler) plus other youths and adults want to learn how to surf. We have been communicating through emails. They were learning how to surf while Terrie's husband, Scott were shooting video for SDDS.

I'm very pleased that Scott willing to shoot video for me while friends and I were giving lessons to the students. We helped the students by pushing them while they were on the soft surfboard so they could ride with the waves. I'm impressed with them that they were emulating from my help to their independent while waves were roughed.

Terrie Berdy and I met at KODAWest event at Huntington Beach in couple weekends ago. I’m happy to give her kids surf lesson until she notified me that 10 deaf and youth want to learn, who came down to Oceanside from Riverside for surf lessons.. We have been communicating through emails. Also, I was thrilled that USDSA help out with rental soft surfboards! I will have surfboards ready before they arrive. I will have friend, who will be volunteer and they does know ASL and experience in surf for years. All of us will spread out by separate groups as focus on student better. We will be there at 9 AM and hang out all day.

Do you have a plan for this weekend? If not then you are welcome to join us. I might have extra surfboards to loan to anyone.

Hello..

I wanted to share with you about SDDS reunion that 6 of us met at Tourmaline Surf Park. We had great talks about our experiences in surfing for many years. We just realized that we have surfed with 2 or 3 of us at the same time until we all met at the reunion at once! We are appreciated with ourselves in the surfing culture that we went through difficult times in the hearing world in the past. Several years later, we got more comfortable with the surfing culture by having friends to give us support and feedbacks. Now we do have more knowledge about surfing culture that we could share our experiences with anyone.

We would like to share our experiences to the youth deaf surfers. Are you ready to join us?

A Deaf Surf Lesson in San Diego from Burbank

Hello..

I want to share with you about Sharon Dror and her family who came down to San Diego from Burbank for surf lessons. Sharon contacted me last week after she saw the SDDS vlog that her kids want to learn how to surf. We have been communicating through emails. Sharon has 2 kids, Michael, 14 years old and Rachel, 11 years old. They were learning how to surf while Sharon and her fiance, Ken Rothschild were shooting video and taking pictures.

I'm very pleased that Sharon willing to shoot video for me while I was giving lessons to the kids. I helped the kids by pushing them while they were on the surfboard so they could ride with the waves. I'm impressed with them that they were emulating from my help to their independent.

Hello..

I want to share a story with you about Tourmaline Surf Park. We called “TL” and this place is special. I enjoy going there because people are friendly and easy going.

Jess, John, and Davy met me there. We discussed if we should surf with small waves. Jess, John, and I agreed to paddle out and catch some waves, while Davy swam underwater with his camera. We all were pleased to be in the warm water. We were chatting while sitting on our surfboards at the same time watching out for swells to come. In between waves, we had to put off our conversations, that way we can focus to catch some waves. After riding the waves, we paddled out then sat on our boards. We continued our conversation.

John, Davy, and I were pleased to listen to Jess’s message from what she heard from other surfers talked. She said, one surfer asked other surfers. What’s different between flat water and parking a lot? The other surfer said, I don’t know. The surfer said,” Just get wet” (chuckle) Also, She shared with us that she noticed that people are friendly and mellow at TL.

We have been surfing there for two hours then we chatted more at the parking lot. Jess, John, Davy and I had a good time until they decided to leave. I grabbed my camcorder to shoot of the waves before I leave. Now you can enjoy the view of the clip.

Hello,

I decided to surf after work. The waves were small but I had fun anyways. I would like to share a story from last weekend. I met a new friend and her name is Danae. She is currently learning ASL and she also watches all the vlogs. I got a real nice gift from her. A cool shirt with printed that says "SDDS". Let me know if you are interested to have one of those tee shirts. I can contact her to get more.

I offered James Queen an interview about his deaf, professional photographer, and surfer in person. I would like to post his photo works on SDDS blogs on this weekend. He and I agreed to have an interview on this Sat. He would be pleased to show his photography talents to the deaf community. He would also like to work as a photographer in the deaf community. I probably will release the vlog this Sat evening or Sunday morning.

Now, I'm ready to go home!

I would like to share with you about yesterday by how much great to see 20 of us showed up at La Jolla Shores and 7 of them were eager to learn surfing with American Sign Language. Also, 8 KODA (Kid of Deaf Adult) Had good times by play hard and of course they worn out after got home.

We had great time at the beach and look forward to come again. I will make announce for having one next time. Also, I would like to discuss about Alexander Graham Bell Association and Deaf Bilingual Coalition but those subject are post on Lenois.com.

Learn how to surf with ASL

Hello..

I would like to share with you about two different kinds of surfboards. This is a blue board is for learning to surf because it makes out of softly foam. It will have less risk for the beginners and less injuries. Now, you see the other white surfboard for who have good surfing skills and who can handle bigger risks.

I would be happy to give you a surf lesson by using American Sign Language. I will be at La Jolla Shores this Sat, July 28th, 2007. Any of you who are interested to learn how to surf, you go rent a surfboard then you can meet me there.

The Wall Street Journal recognized SDDS!!

I was interviewed with Shefali Anand, who is a writer for the Wall Street Journal. She wrote an article called”Sign of the Times: Video, Email Are Boons to the Deaf”. We chatted through the Video Relay Service and me spoken in primary language which is American Sign Language. Then, Shefali sent me an email to ask me to check her draft on the article. I do appreciate with this person, who had been a pleasure to work with and was interested in SDDS!

Today, I read this article and I’m very pleased to see other vloggers in this article. Kudos to Jon Thompson, Chelsea Lydell, Robert Davila, Bobbie Beth Scoggins, Ms. Lydell, Tayler Mayer, Jared Evans, Gary Brooks, and Austin Andrews! I’m looking forward to see more new ASL vloggers to be recognized from a newspaper soon!

Now, I will make an announcement to have anyone who can join and hang out with us this summer. We plan on going to the San Onofre State Beach and other beaches since all of us had so much fun last year.

1st Annual California Coastal Views Film Festival: 3 videos got in!

I was shocking when I got this message by California Coastal Views Film Festival. I was so thrilling that they've selected three videos!

Here, their comment:

Congratulations! Your videos, Deaf Surf Lesson at La Jolla Shores, 3 Deaf surfers at Marine Corps Base (ASL VLOG), and Deaf and surf culture (ASL VLOG), has been selected for the First Annual California Coastal Views Film Festival, hosted by Coastwalk (www.Coastwalk.org ).

Films are being collected from those tagged with key words indicating they contain scenes of the California coast. Until May 1st, they will screened and separated into logical categories (coastrides, places and wildlife, trips, waves and surfers, etc.). From May 6th until May 20th, members of the board of directors of Coastwalk are being asked to narrow the selection to the top ten in each of the categories. Coastwalk's reputation for hosting walks in California counties over the past 24 years makes it especially qualified to make these choices. The final judging will be done by the members of the 2003 California Coastal Expedition, those who walked the entire coast of California during that spring and summer. Winning films will then be viewed by this year's coastwalkers prior to their scheduled walks on California's coastal counties.

To find Old Man's and Trails, exit 5 FWY at Basilone Road and head south. The entrance to the San Onofre State Surfing Beach (Old Man's) is a turnout on the right before reaching the Power Plant. Continue south past the Power Plant to reach the San Onofre State Beach campground entrance (Trails). The rangers at either of these gates can direct you to a parking area and provide information about availability, regulations, fees and current conditions.

I would like to share about my extreme experience in surfing at midnight. I was very excited while getting ready to go to Tourmaline. I smelled the bonfire while I was driving towards to the beach. It made me to look forward to arrive at the beach. It was so amazing to see a full moon and it reflected the light on the water.

I was a little bit nervous about my new experience until I drank the energy drink that made me feel boosted up. I was rushed by changing clothes and paddle out. I was pleased that I could see the reflection on the water from a full moon. I was awkward by riding on the first waves then I had to study the waves since it's the opposite of light in daytime. I caught the waves several times to understand the concept of catching waves. My vision through the images of the waves in reversed glows.

I have been surfing for more than one hour. I got myself in my truck then drove through the town. I felt weird to see all the stores and bars being closed. I'm not used to the street being quiet that they tend to have people and cars.

Finally, I got home and hit the sack . It's 2 AM! So, good night... oops! I mean good morning!

Hello again,
I assured that you guys already have read my July 4^th blog. Marla Hatrak did ask me if I do know anyone, who is willing to teach surf lessons in ASL. I offered her that I'm willing to give surf lessons based on my experiences. I got a confirmation from her yesterday so I can get the 4 rental surfboards for them.

Video view: Of course, I must have Starbucks to boost my energy since I will have a long morning. I have been up since 5:30 AM!

"2 Hours later..."

Video view: Tory said," I caught 3 to 4 waves and I had fun!" Tory, Clayton, Brandon, and Hetty. (Earlier that morning - Doug and Matthew had a good surfing)

Also, we have 20+ beachgoers that joined with us and they enjoyed chatting with friends including the kids.

Video View: Tina Jo said," It has been a long time since I have seen my friends and La Jolla Shores beach. It was good seeing people here. That was so nice!"

Everyone chatted in American Sign Languages with many different topics.

I was enjoying being with friends by surfing, chatting, and soaking in the sun! Some of us already are excited to make plans going to San Onofre on July 16^th.

Hello,

My family and I were so excited to have fun at La Jolla Shores beach for July 4th! The night before, we were packing our food and beach stuff. We wanted to be ready to arrive at the beach early as possible to reserve the bonfire ring. Unfortunately, at 5:30 AM we were too late to reserve the bonfire ring because the beach was open at 4 AM!! The grass field next to the beach was already packed and was filled up with umbrellas, tents, canopies, and people!

We got lucky that we got to the front row of the parking lot. We made an announcement to have everyone to meet at a specific location, but it was filled up quickly. John, Reed, and I surfed after we made a living room under the canopy. Reed and I surfed for over 2 hours on the water, which it was glassy with small & good shaped waves.

Our daughter, Renny was so excited being in the water and hopped over the waves (see in pictures). She was very lucky that she has friends to play with. Our friends were happy to loan their boogie board to Renny and she got addicted to it! She knew that she had to share it with her friends but she kept saying one more, one more, and one more!

We were very pleased to see our 20 - 25 friends and they joined and chatted with us. We felt honored by our friends who they wanted to hold our son, Lenny while we could watch or play with Renny in the water. We borrowed our friend, Joe Keller's kayak and we felt very spoiled going on kayaking alone. We explored the swells on the way to La Jolla Cove and looked at the caves down below where people went snorkeling. Later in that afternoon, Reed and I surfed again for another 2 hours and we got out of the water before sunset!

We thought we wouldn’t be able to have a bonfire since we couldn't reserve the bonfire ring. Chris and Kary brought their fire pit so we could have a bonfire!! YAYYYY!! Some of our friends have left before the fireworks and some of us stayed and watched the beautiful fireworks in 3 different places. We had s’mores and sat in our living room. We left La Jolla shores at 10 PM and the traffic was terrible, it was bumper to bumper for 30 minutes! If there was no heavy traffic then we could have got home within 5 minutes!

Surf at midnight - July 10th

Hello again,

My friend spread out the word about getting together for surfing at midnight on July 10th because there will be a full moon! Some of my friends already are interested to join but I'm not sure which location we will be at.

Here are my suggestions where we can go to surf at Tourmaline Surf Park (North Pacific Beach Area), La Jolla Shores, or Cardiff Reef. All three locations are in San Diego.

If you are interested to join us then let me know which you would like to go? Please do vote by July 8th then I can make an announcement on the next day.

San Onofre State Beach - Old Man's

Hello again,

My friends and I went to San Onofre State Beach "SanO" and we tended to surf often at a specific area called "Old Man's". You would appreciate if you go there and get some surfing culture experience with friendly people. SanO is one of the landmarks for surf history.

During the summertime, the waves tend to be small as perfect for learning how to surf. If you already have surfing experience then you would have fun there with your longboard.

If you are interested to join us then please do contact me!

Additional information

We are considering to go to Old Man's on July 16th and 30th (Both days are on Sunday). Also, we probably would be there before sunrise because the parking a lot will fill up quickly.

Let’s celebrate Independence Day at La Jolla Shores by surfing, swimming, soaking in the sun and parting together!!!! The Savage family plans to be there all day and evening. We could see the fireworks at La Jolla Cove from the beach so we can stay for a bonfire if anyone is up for it. We will reserve few spots for all of us next to the bonfire at tower 32 if needed. We will bring wood pallets. Bring your own stuff & food. See you all there.

6/26/06 Sunset Cliff

Marina went to the secret spot in Sunset Cliff s area last week with her friend. She got stoked from surfing there. She decided to introduce the secret spot to SDDS and go surfing with her.

Marina, Reed, and I met at the parking a lot between 6 to 6:30 PM. She warned us that there would be a long walk to the secret spot. I enjoyed by walk ing though bushes and some mini-canyons like in the movie "Indian Jones" like an adventure trip. Also, we walked through the baseball field. Then, we had to be careful by walking down the hill by the cliff since it was very deep. The water was splashing on the cliff s where we had to paddle out quickly before the big swell comes and hits.

There were three other surfers were out in the water besides us ready to catch some waves. I learned the waves have different characters than any other beach in my experience. The perky waves were processed quickly as we probably could do the pearl dive to the bottom of the ocean floor. It turned out it was a successful after we paddle to catch. We enjoyed our sessions right before the sunset.

We walked back to the same route and the water sprinklers were on at the baseball field. We were pleased to rinse our boards while the water spray moved to different direct ions, which we had to chase them until our boards get clean completely. (Ha.. ha..) Finally, we left parking a lot at 8:30 PM.

It was a great experience for me including my friends, Marina and Reed!

Hello SDDS,

Reed and I were paddling out and it wasn’t really crowded on the water on Saturday. It was nice for us because we had more room to catch waves as much we can. The waves were little bit weak by shaped but there were surf-able by longboard. Later in the morning, the wind got speed up and the water sprayed on our faces while paddling as we tried to catch waves which were really difficult. So, we gave up but caught the last wave and rode all way to the land by lucky!

Reed and I were considering having a couple trips and surf at San Onofre with families.

Ultimate Sessions

One of our friends invited Holly and I go to the theatre and watched a movie called, “Ultimate Sessions” in La Jolla. It was an interesting movie. I didn’t realize surfers don’t wear any leash plus single fin on their “retro” surfboard that rides through barrel. I was impressed with those surfers because I don’t see any of those like that today.

I almost forgot about what’s so cool in 1970’s:

Yellow tank top with zipper on the front “wetsuit”

If you don’t remember those days then you were probably too young or grew up in somewhere far away from the ocean.

My Dad was surfing a lot after graduated from high school in 1969 and he continued to surf until mid-1970. I had a big inference by my dad about surfing. He fixed and painted cool art on “retro” surfboard and gave it to me for x-mas or birthday in mid-1980. Every time, I see it hanging on the wall outside of poolside, it makes me proud of my dad.
